Chené Harris Media studies CCR question planing The triller genre in particular is one of the most popular and well enjoyed genres. This movie genre had placed on of my top 5 most loved/ preferred genres out of 8; by having this preferred genre in my top 5 I would most likely aim to distribute and fund my film through crowd-funding, hoping that the audience I show/advertise my short friends to would enjoy watching thrillers. I personally wouldn’t really want to send a YouTube or vevo link to our to the crowds that would fund my film - just because of accounts that may be hacked and or pirated. I would however send out various parts of the short film; for example how the strange man stares at the little girl (Amberley) for a while and then ends up abducting her - this would also draw the audiences attention to my film and therefore would most likely like to fund my film. I enjoyed the flow of your movie opening, I thought the beginning part setting up the scene worked well. The music was a good fit for the on screen acton.
Just make sure you think through and plan the setting better next time. Planning an abduction in a busy park is slightly unrealistic and makes the viewer think about how unlikely it is that no one around is noticing rather than getting absorbed in the storyline. That is unfortunate. remember a convention of thrillers is locations - being isolated / confined spaces / creepy settings etc.
Remember to use your research of thriller openings to really copy the techniques and conventions of how they work. The production company logo really needs to come right at the beginning, not the end. The end shots worked well but not the title and production logo edited into the storyline. That needs to be in the beginning or at the end of the opening sequence.
The Title seemed a bit removed from the feel of the movie. It obviously represented a youthful dynamic but it flashed up so quickly and the look and feel of it didn't feel like it really fitted with the film (if you are filming on City Streets you may have the title overlaid over a City landscape, if you are filming in a spooky forrest you may overlay the title over an establishing shot. Very rarely,if ever, would you have the title on a poster type slide. Just a thought for next time. Make it integrated and purposeful in the film.
I think the shots from inside the car are effective, watching the mum walk away and watching the little girl on the swing.
Also just watch sound levels. There is an obvious change in sound levels when kidnapper gets out of the car and again when he is talking to the little girl,the background noise is very audible and then cuts out so continuity issues sound-wise.
Overall an effective thriller opening, just the details that need tweaking for next time to make it more realistic and to fit the conventions of a real opening sequence.
