Audiences and Institutions Work

ACTIVITY 1;

1. WHAT ARE TWO DIFFERENT FINANCIAL MODELS THAT DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENTS         ARE BASED ON?
  • leasing
  • profit sharing
2. DESCRIBE WHAT THEY BOTH ENTAIL:
  • leasing is when the distributor pays a certain amount for the rights to lease their film, (distribute their film)
  • Profit-sharing is simply just the percentage of what the distributor gets once the film gets distributed e.g: 15%
3. WHAT ARE ANCILLARY RIGHTS?
  • Ancillary rights: are the rights that the film gets to everything being put into the film such as the soundtrack this may also include distributing the film onto a VHS or a DVD disc, etc.
4.  WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF THE FIRM'S 'OPENING' AND WHAT FACTORS ARE                 TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT A FILM'S OPENING?
  • 'opening' is the first or 'official' debut of the film. These factors are taken into consideration when it comes to deciding on the films 'opening': Studio, target audience, star power, buzz, and season.
5. WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF A FILM HAS 'LEGS'? WHAT MIGHT DETERMINE THIS?
  • when a film has 'legs' this just means that it is able to remain popular and well supported for a long period of time. If by any chance the film lacks any one of those factors previously mentioned this just shows that the film won't have the support of 'legs'. Factors affecting this include, the amount of buzz created around the film, it's target audience, may be the wrong time of the season.
6.  AT THE TIME OF THIS ARTICLE, HOW MANY THEATRES WERE THERE ACROSS USA       AND WHERE ARE THEY MOSTLY LOCATED?
  • At this time in the article, there were 37,000 screenings (theatres) across the USA. A majority of them were/ are located in popular areas and cities.
7. WHAT ROLES DOES A 'BUYER' PLAY AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TERMS THEY            NEGOTIATE?
  • Buyers are used in presenting theatres in negotiating with distribution companies.
8. WHAT ARE THE TWO WAYS THEATRE MAY RELEASE A MOVIES? EXPLAIN HOW              THEY WORK
  • A theatre can either lease a movie by bidding or by percentage. By bidding this involves the buyer paying a fixed amount to the distributor for the right to show the film, whereas percentage means that both the parties receive a percentage of the box office (ticket sales)
9. WHAT IS MEANT BY 'LOSS LEADER'
  • This just simply means the theatre makes most of its profits from selling household items such as popcorn and drinks rather than the actual movie tickets.
