Thriller brainstorm:
Rationale:
Chene Harris
Brain storm:
Asylum
Characters that I have chosen are a mentally ill patient and a news reporter.
I chose the mentally ill patient as one of the characters because he gives off a crazy unfit sense of feeling and us as the audience get more curious as to what he may get up to in the next few scenes. The news reporter being character two was chosen because a news reporter gives off an alert or a curious sense of feeling as to what she may be publishing, especially since the news reporter is on her own in an asylum...
I based my scenes inside of an asylum because I feel that an asylum in the middle of the night is quite scary but not too scary for a horror. The asylum also gives off that crazy mental sense of feel.
During scene one we start off by listening and watching water drop from a pipe onto the ground from quite a distance away, as the camera moves closer the droplets become more visible and they become louder. As we move on to scene two we get a wide shot showing us a darkly lit hallway will only a little bit of light coming through. At scene three the camera then moves on to show the audience a wide shot of where the mentally ill patient has been sleeping, eating and drinking. In scene four the camera angles then change to an extreme close-up giving the audience the sense that they are looking directly over the mentally ill patient and that they are in the exact same room as him. Scene five shows us a point of view shot coming from the mentally ill patient looking at the news reporter leave his room silently... Scene six shows us a tilting angle and a point of view shot coming from the patient as he stands by his door, looking almost confused as to why the news reporter is on her own in the middle of the night holding a mic. Scene seven gives us a high angle shot of the patient walking away from the camera, showing the the audience that the paitnet is weak and is finding it hard to come up with a plan to escape the building. Scene eight basically shows/says the same thing except the patient is walking towards the the camera still having no clue as to escape the building with out the news reporter finding him. Towards the end of scene eight the camera then zooms into the patient, scene nine then becomes a black with non-diagetic music playing in the background.

Excemption:
The heavy breathing and tapping was well put together, the way they did it shows us that they are trying to get the audience more involved in the scene. - The camera angles they used were also well put together, this shows us more of whats going on yet you have no idea whats going to happen next.
- They put in some good non-diagetic music as the pen gets stabbed into one of the characters legs, this gets the audience more intrigued and excited for whats going to happen next.
Inner evil:

- The way that they have opened the scene with non-diagetic music already draws the audience is closer because we are not sure what to expect.
- The use of the close-up zoom in camera angle really shows us as the audience more whats going on when we don't know going on already.
- The way the character woke up from her sleep was as if she had a nightmare of what had happened in the past/the night before, and shes remembering everything that morning.
Insider:

- The way that they had opened up the scene with a character being held hostage with tape over her mouth clearly shows us that they are trying to draw the audience closer and keep us hooked onto what is happening and why it's all happening.
- The dark lighting that is coming through shows us-as the audience that the scene is being held at night to give off more of a thriller kind of feel to it.
- I like how the beginning of the short film is being based off of a bad dream/nightmare to either show whats going to happen further in,in the movie or it symbolizes something that has already happened in the past.
Wishbone:
https://youtu.be/d_OiWtv7EOM
- The beginning shows that one of the characters are being stalked and it's been shown from the stalkers point of view.
- The sound affects that are being used are quite good and i like the way they use flashbacks to show more about the character that is being stalked.
- The effects that have used are really good especially when you can see a shot of the girl dancing but then you can also see a faded shot of her doing something else but still links up to the specific scene.

- just a technical error - this is all 1 SCENE, different shots. So when referring in your rationale to the different 'blocks' of your storyboard, it is all different shots within the same scene.
- storywise, just be mindful of considering verisimilitude. How realistic is your situation? You have the 'freaky', suspense-building aspects to your scene and that's great, but how realistic is it that a new reporter would be in a mental asylum at night? Why would they be there? Does it seem like a plausible situation?
- some good thought has gone into depicting your scene, I like the setting of the asylum, the dripping tap is a clever way to start. Good use of shadows.
- you don't explicitly tell me what 3 conventions you are using and also whether there is anything iconic or symbolic being used to imply deeper meaning in your film.
- one thing I want you to work on is trying to create vocabulary to say what you're meaning. For example, the sentences; "because a news reporter gives off an alert or a curious sense of feeling as to what she may be publishing" and "I chose the mentally ill patient as one of the characters because he gives off a crazy unfit sense of feeling", these don't make sense grammatically although I get what you're 'trying; to say. Read your writing out loud before your submit it, see if it makes sense. Try find language/ words to describe what it is you're trying to say. Why else might you choose a mentally unstable person to be in your thriller film? What is it about mentally ill people that can be scary to the average person?
- Also, you mentioned the horror genre. We are doing thrillers, make sure you understand the difference and refer to what you're doing as a thriller.
